New Year, New Word

Approaching the new year allows for reflection of the past year and hope for the new year. Each year comes with blessings and challenges. For some, 2019 might have been an amazing year with new and fun experiences. While for others, the past year might have been filled with pain, suffering, and sorrow. A new year brings a new beginning, and a refreshing restart. Making a New Years resolution has never been something I have enjoyed doing. Making goals, and setting goals can be a good thing when you accomplish them. But sometimes, making goals can be discouraging when you fall short on those goals year after year. Typically, most people shoot high and make goals like doing 100 push ups for 100 days (tried that and failed miserably). Or working out daily, eating healthier, cutting out sugar, and the list can go on and on for days.

Instead of focusing on a goal, I focus on a word. For the past two years, I have chosen a word of the year to focus on, read more about, pray on, and apply it to my daily life. In 2018, my word of the year was bold. Bold became my word of the year after praying about it for a few months. I wanted this word, because I tend to be the opposite of bold. I can be an introvert most of the time and become pretty reserved. I wanted a word that I could pray about and apply that would push me out of my comfort zone. Throughout the year, the word bold continually showed up in my scripture reading and became a constant prayer for my life. The book of Acts allowed me to see Paul as an example on what boldness for Christ should look like. Praying for boldness for a whole year, gave me opportunities to talk about Christ to unbelievers. God gave me opportunities to share the gospel with others, when years previous, I might be hesitant to do so.

In 2019, my word of the year was presence. I chose this word to learn more about Gods presence and to be more present in my prayers, scripture reading, and in my relationships with others. Too often in the world we live in today, we are glued to our phones feeling connected to followers, but disconnected from those sitting directly in front of us. Choosing the word presence helped me learn more about who God is, his character, and how to be more present in my daily life with others and with my relationship with God.

My word for 2020 is going to be comfort. I am not sure what God has in store for me with this word yet, but I am excited to see what is to come. The past two years I have grown and learned a tremendous amount from my word studies and prayers.

If you are like me, and are hesitant to set high goals for the new year. Or even if you love goals, I encourage you to pick a word of the year to focus on. Choose a word that you can study and reflect on throughout the year and apply to your life. Choosing a word of the year can be beneficial to you as a person, and with your walk with Christ. Pray and ask God what your word of the year should be. If you choose a word, share it with me! I would love to hear what you have chosen. I pray that this year is filled with blessings and comfort. Make this year an amazing year, start new and keep fighting the good fight.

"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." Lamentations 3:22-23
